In an effort to prioritize safety, many California cities have approved a form of a 'hotel worker protection ordinance' that provides a hotel panic button to employees. Cities with effective ordinances are:

  • Anaheim
  • Glendale
  • Irvine
  • Long Beach
  • Los Angeles
  • Oakland
  • Sacramento
  • Santa Monica
  • West Hollywood

This article covers Sacramento’s comprehensive panic button legislation and its impact on hotels. For more compliance details for other cities and states in the United States, view our Panic Button Legislation Guide for Hoteliers here.

Overview

In January 2020, the Sacramento City code drafted and adopted Chapter 5.78 HOTEL WORKER PROTECTION. This ordinance applies to approximately 75% of Sacramento's hotels and motels.

Outline of Hotel Employer Responsibilities

Sacramento hotels must provide employees with a panic button or notification device. This ordinance applies to hotels and motels with 25 or more rooms and requires that hoteliers comply with the following:

  • The devices must be easy for employees to activate quickly to summon hotel staff.
  • Provide a panic button or notification device at no cost to the employees.
  • Employers may be required to train employees on how to use the panic buttons effectively and when to activate them.

What Features Should Your Panic Buttons Have?

Once you understand the requirements for panic buttons, finding the perfect device can feel overwhelming. Keep these important features in mind when selecting an employee safety device:

  • The safety device should be user-friendly so your staff can easily call for help.
  • The device should be discreet and comfortable when worn.
  • When the button is pressed, the device must notify all staff and security within seconds.
